View Image   Printed “Program of Inaugural Ceremonies” for F.D.R.’s first term, Mar. 4, 1933. 4 pp. of highly detailed schedule, beginning with escort from residence to the White House, each automobile numbered, with passengers’ names listed for each. “Proceedings in the Senate Chamber carefully scheduled before, during, and following the oath of office and thence to the White House.” This Inaugural program bears little resemblance to more recent ones. Probably a limited printing, to conform to smaller number of guests selected to witness the taking of the oath of office indoors. Fine. $125.00

2036. Revolutionary War Bible Leaf. With scorched edge! In 1776, the first Bible to be produced with type cast in America was printed in Germantown, Pa., by Christopher Saur. Local fighting between Americans and British engulfed Saur’s printing shop, and many of the Bibles printed were destroyed. American soldiers used Saur Bible pages for gunwadding. An unusual relic from the historic year of 1776. Printed in Gothic style, in German, with scorched edge. About 7 x 10. Unwrinkled and otherwise fine. With photocopy of title page. $25.00

2038. Hebrew/Latin Leaf. Original leaf, 1584, printed by Christopher Plantin, the outstanding scholar-printer of his time, in Antwerp. From Biblia Hebraica, in Hebrew, with Latin text in side notes, and also beneath each line of Hebrew text. 8 1/2 x 13 1/2. Plantin’s printing shop still survives today as a museum. 2055. John F. Kennedy and the Race to the Moon. View Image   Pair of small broadsheets, 7 x 10, with copy of J.F.K.’s typed letter to Vice Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson, on the urgency for preparing to go to the Moon, and the program he wishes to be followed. Both bear the same letter and photo of J.F.K., but one has U.S. postage stamp showing the moon “...In the beginning” with postmark of Port Washington, N.Y., July 20, 1969, marked “Apollo.” • The second item bears postage stamp “First Men on the Moon,” marked “First Day of Issue,” with two postmarks: “Moon Landing - July 20, 1969” and “Washington, D.C. - Sept. 9, 1969” (illustrated). 2056. Tobacco License. 1880s, issued by U.S. Internal Revenue. 7 x 13, including stub, green tax stamp permitting “Dealer in Manufactured Tobacco” to sell cigars and cigarettes. Vignette of seated woman. Few hole cancels, but unused and very fine. $19.50

2057. Idlewild Airport’s First Year. Envelope, #12 size, with large cachet of N.Y.C.’s first international airport. Located in Queens, it is today one of the world’s largest airports. With 8¢ airmail stamp, cancelled, and four assorted airmail stickers, including Northwest and TWA. Imprinted “Idlewild Dedication,” it was dedicated by Pres. Truman in 1948, and is postmarked that same year. Since renamed Kennedy International Airport. Uncommon and fine. $9.75

2067. World War II Currency. Circulated by Philippine guerillas in areas occupied by Japanese. Backed by U.S. after Japanese invasion, these notes were either parachute-dropped or printed locally. Anyone found in possession of this currency risked execution by the Japanese. One of the most dramatic of war currencies. Set of seven different, variously picturing Pres. Roosevelt, Pres. Quezon, Negros, and islands of Cebu and Mindanao. Set includes 1, 2, 5, and 20 pesos, and 50 centavos. Some printed from plates made from rubber tires! 2072. Gen. Winfield Scott. Civil War era envelope with cachet of Scott, commander-in-chief of U.S. Army at beginning of Civil War. He was the only non-West Pointer of Southern origin in the regular Army to remain loyal to the Union. $12.50

2075. “To avoid the draft....” Pay order, 19th Ward, Philadelphia, 1864, partly printed, unused. Authorizing payment (name to be filled in) “to pay Volunteers to avoid the Draft.” 3 1/2 x 8, stub attached. Recruit awarded “Extra Bounty from this Ward.” Highly unusual with respect to language and timing, the Draft Riots having occurred the previous year. Very fine. $65.00

2076. Surgeon’s Report. Nov. 11, 1863, partly printed. Surgeon of 4th District, New Jersey, advises that soldier examined is unfit to perform active field duty due to hernia, and can serve in Invalid Corps. Very fine. $55.00

2077. General Orders 54th Mass. Volunteers. The famous Black unit in the Civil War. General Order no. 58, Morris Island, S.C., June 11, 1864, 1 p. Concerning a “General Census of males, ages 18-50...not in Military or Naval Service...,” reporting name, age, color and occupation. Signed by Wm. Easton, 1st Lt., 32nd U.S.C(olored) T(roops). 2078. Civil War General Order. Washington, Feb. 18, 1864, 2 pp. No. 59. Capt. Bashfield of 2nd Virginia Vol. Infantry charged with “conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman...(He) did have unlawful carnal intercourse with a lewd woman or common prostitute...became diseased with syphilis...has been unfit for duty since Oct. 1862....” Found guilty “...to be dismissed...The President approves the sentence.” Two small binding holes, else fine. Unusual example of Southern state raising volunteers for the Union. $55.00

2079. Civil War General Order. Washington, Nov. 5, 1861, 4 pp. No. 95. Equipping the Army for the war: chart of three pages listing clothing, camp, garrison and horse equipment. Cost of each category with allowance for each year. Estimate made for a war of five years duration! Very fine. $45.00

2080. Civil War General Order. Washington, Feb. 6, 1862, 2 pp. No. 12. On order seeking to abolish the abuse of the General of Volunteers appointing anyone to his staff: this is reserved only for the President of the United States. The only exception allowed is that of an appointment as aide-de-camp, but even that appointment must be selected according to the law of July 29, 1861. This Order by command of Gen. McClellan. Fine. $35.00

2081. Civil War General Order. Washington, Aug. 3, 1861, 1 p. No. 51. Piece of the original leather top of the 1893 Duryea automobile, one of the most historic and most photographed artifacts of American industrial history, presently in Smithsonian. This is from the Duryea's first successfully running automobile, actually driven by them, and built prior to their victory in America's first auto race in 1895. Original manuscript document dated July 4, 1776, from oldest town in Connecticut, Wethersfield, for "a Gun & Bayonet...to be used in ye Colony'?s] Service 'in] the ensuing Campaign...." Signed for by prominent patriot Joseph Andrus, whose home was often filled with townspeople seeking protection. Located in the center of town near the famed Meeting House, where Washington, Silas Deane, and others periodically plotted, Andrus was undoubtedly acquainted with all of them. Wethersfield, Conn., "July 4th, 1776." Revolutionary War, July 4 1776, 1776, Early America, Wethersfield, Connecticut, Joseph Andrus, George Washington, Founding Fathers, Manuscript, Document, Autograph. Wethersfield played a key role in American history. Early 1950's Jaguar racing poster, issued in tiny numbers by factory following victory at Rheims, France. 20 x 29-3/4, red and navy blue on white, printed in Coventry, England by Jaguar factory's customary shop. "Rheims International 12 Hours Sports Car Race/Jaguar's 3rd Successive Win...." In the difficult years following the war, Jaguar was enjoying tremendous success in racing, shaping the Jaguar mystique which persists to this day, and including some of the most celebrated drivers of the Fifties on their team. Following this race, a very small number of posters were hurriedly printed for mailing to Jaguar dealers for showroom and window display.
